~ adv 1 according to the most basic or original meaning of a word or expression  (`Inspire' literally meant `to breathe into'. | mean sth literally (=mean exactly what you say))  (I know I said I felt like quitting, but I didn't mean it literally!) 2 take sb/sth literally to only understand the most basic meaning of words, phrases etc, often with the result that you do not understand what someone really means  (Christians who take the Bible literally) 3 used to emphasize that something is actually true  (The Olympic Games were watched by literally billions of people.) 4 spoken used to emphasize something you say that is already expressed strongly  (Dad was literally blazing with anger.)
